What the Snap Test Requires

Ontario uses the SAE J1667 snap-acceleration smoke test procedure for heavy-duty diesel opacity testing under DriveON / O. Reg. 169/22. The vehicle must be stationary, and the exhaust outlet must be accessible so approved opacity-testing equipment can be installed and operated according to the DriveON procedure.

Yard Space and Safety

Many carrier yards provide sufficient space, while tighter multi-tenant properties may require a bay or test position to be cleared in advance. Do not stage the test where pedestrians, forklifts, or other traffic will cross behind the exhaust during acceleration snaps.

• Clear the area around the exhaust outlet
• Avoid confined indoor spots unless the facility and procedure allow safe testing there
• Keep bystanders and other vehicles out of the plume path

Vehicle Readiness Before the Technician Arrives

• Confirm the unit needs an emissions inspection under Ontario's RGW and registration triggers
• Bring the engine to normal operating temperature when practical
• Ensure odometer / vehicle identification details are available for the inspection record
• Confirm the unit can safely reach the throttle response required for the snap-acceleration procedure
• Queue multiple due trucks so they can be tested sequentially on one visit

Grouping Units on One Visit

For a carrier running several due units through the same yard, testing back-to-back on one visit is usually more efficient than separate trips, because the mobile facility and technician are already on site and each additional truck mainly adds its own test cycle time.
